Relationship with Team

What is the value in building relationship with team, does it always helps in positive way, or it becomes a challenge at times.

I have been working with the team since long time and experience is different every-time, common things that is maintained as a practice and written in process books are more or less similar or in a pattern, this includes tasks like running your sprints,  doing deliveries and completing the project. These tasks are defined in org level programs and being tracked by metrics. The project manager along with process teams always tries to bring improvement in the processes to make things more smooth and enhance the overall delivery quality.

The other aspect, how the team members are performing individually and in the team what all issues are there that is impacting the overall performance of members and impacting the project indirectly, this is also checked on a high level by feedback and appraisal mechanism from the HR practices, that actually helps as well in bringing improvements.

But after all these efforts by the organization, there is still one very important aspect in team, that is the relationships within the team members and as a team. I have worked with teams for a very short period of time ending in a week and also worked in multiple long time team engagements ranging up-to many years. The teams that had personal bonding and good relations were always the best ones, at times those teams were self running teams that delivered outstanding performances irrespective of situations.

The major points that impacts the team’s relationships as per my experience are :

  1. Resolving teams conflicts as early as possible, best would be to resolve them even before they are about to occur, Managers would be knowing what I mean to say here.
  2. Try and build a one on one relationship with each one in the team both professionally and try on the personal front as well.
  3. Everybody in your team is a champion and your true best friend, remember this always and build on this.
  4. Work on building relationship with the rebels by making them comfortable and gaining their confidence, you need to continuously work on these. This will be tough but the results after you are able to achieve are divine.

“Sometimes to much relationship is dangerous” This is something I have been hearing since ages and I have not found single instance where having a good relationship and reputation with your team has raised any threat. Trust me, it is the best asset of a Manager to work and build a relationship with team.
