Project Manager’s Portfolio

Why a Portfolio

What is the need of a portfolio, does it make any difference ?

If you think you have done enough work and would like to showcase your learning and experience, making a portfolio will definitely make a difference. However you already might be active on multiple social platforms and other platforms where you are sharing lot of your work related contents, your resume and other media content that would show your work.

If you have a portfolio site this will give others a consolidated view of overall experience you have gained, you can always categorize the content based on different domains, technologies, challenges level or any other  metric.

Ways to build Portfolio

There are multiple ways of making you portfolio, I have seen portfolios that are primarily focused on the Projects, then under each project there will be a case study about the project and overall learning and takeaways. This kind of creation however gives you a very organized kind of platform that will be easier to manage later as well. If you have primarily worked on projects that are from same domain, this will definitely make sense.

Another way of making the portfolio is by creating a question and answer series over your learning and domains, this gives opportunity to start right from the points that were highlights in your experience. This will be much more interesting to look out for somebody who is searching exactly same problem. Another aspect of this approach is to get the overall experience listed around the learning.

Benefit of creating Portfolio

There are benefits of creating the portfolio, some are for others and some are personal. For others the best benefit is to let them know about your experience and benefit from it, they can go ahead and directly use your experience in their lives.

For you as well, it is a kind of reference point, there are lot of learning on a daily basis that are accumulating, you cannot remember each of them always, some fade away with time and some gets overwritten by future instances. So best would be to create your portfolio based on your day to day learning and engagements. This will become a reference point in future that you can use.

Tools to create a Portfolio

Best is to get a website and start writing on it, my choice is WordPress based website where you can always go and manage you experience, WordPress also gives option to create you website on their domain and manage it from there, but my recommendation would be to host the website yourself. This also gives the flexibility to add more features as you require in future.

For starting to write your portfolio you can do it offline as well and when you are ready with good amount of content, then transfer it online.

Hosting a website does not need lot of technical expertise, you can easily find the steps to launch your WordPress website online, but I would like to help if you want any help as I have setup this website on my own from the overall previous technical experience that I have.
